The University of Sydney’s Lecture Room Refurbishment in Building J02 is a forward-looking upgrade designed to reshape how students and educators teach, learn, and collaborate across the campus.

Designed by Architectus and delivered by Hansen Yuncken, the space is built around flexibility, supporting everything from traditional lectures to technology-enabled, group-based learning. Movable walls, adaptable furniture, and advanced audiovisual systems allow the room to transition quickly between formats, including multiple simultaneous activities within adjacent zones.

With the ability to subdivide into four primary quadrants and host several student groups at once, acoustic performance became a defining requirement to protect clarity, focus, and comfort. The final environment feels dynamic and inclusive, designed to evolve with the university’s changing teaching needs for years to come.

Our
Contribution

We supplied and procured tailored acoustic lining solutions for the project, working closely with the design team to meet the demands of a highly flexible, multi-use teaching environment. Keisha Leon’s “Connections in Country” from the Contours of Country range was specified for its acoustic performance and strong visual narrative, delivered as bulkhead feature panels.

What We Procured

  • Acoustic wall & ceiling systems
  • Timber and hybrid linings
  • Fibre cement panels
  • Architectural finishes
  • Metal, aluminium or screening elements
  • Fit-out elements
  • Specialist or custom materials
Most materials were manufactured through our partner network, drawing on more than 50 years of Australian experience in engineered acoustic and architectural systems.

Technical Requirements Supported

The project required the following:
  • Fire ratings and documentation
  • Acoustic performance requirements
  • ESG, sustainability or Green Star/ISCA criteria
  • Accessibility, durability or moisture resistance requirements
  • Panel layouts, prototyping, or pre-installation coordination
Myee Collective coordinated the documentation required for Group fire ratings, acoustic performance, sustainability certifications and delivery sequencing to support project timelines.

Community
Outcomes

This refurbishment creates a learning space where communication remains clear, even when multiple classes and discussions occur side-by-side, supporting better attention, participation, and student wellbeing. By integrating Keisha Leon’s artwork, the project embeds meaningful Indigenous storytelling into a contemporary academic setting, connecting students to culture through everyday experience. The warmth of the timber finish and the room’s adaptable layout promote inclusion and community, encouraging collaboration across diverse learning styles. Overall, Building J02 now offers a future-ready, culturally resonant teaching environment that strengthens the university’s capacity to deliver modern, engaging education.
