The New Student Precinct (NSP) at The University of Melbourne is a major transformation of the campus heart, designed by Lyons Architecture and delivered with Kane Constructions and a wide team of collaborators.

Conceived as a place where rich cultural histories meet contemporary student life, the precinct reconnects the campus to the city and creates new opportunities for interaction, performance, and gathering.

Within this broader vision sits the 400-seat Proscenium Arch Union Theatre, carefully threaded into and around existing heritage fabric. The brief for the theatre was to honour its original character while delivering a fully contemporary performance space. Classic film imagery was reinterpreted as a perforated graphic across the wall and ceiling panels, creating a subtle, cinematic narrative that ties the past to the present.

Our
Contribution

We supplied custom perforated panels for the Union Theatre featuring heritage-inspired imagery, matched to a bespoke blue colour palette explicitly developed for the project. We procured non-standard finishes, produced an extensive suite of samples for architect approval, and developed a tailored translucent backing system to enable integrated lighting effects through the panels. To support the theatre’s dramatic, angled geometry, we also created and supplied complex shop drawings and aluminium framing, ensuring the panels could be installed at precise angles without compromising performance or appearance. Our local manufacturing capability allowed us to coordinate the many modules, finishes, and integrated elements required for this highly detailed fitout.

What We Procured

  • Acoustic wall & ceiling systems
  • MDF panels
Materials were manufactured through our partner network, drawing on more than 50 years of Australian experience in engineered acoustic and architectural systems.

Technical Requirements Supported

The project required the following:
  • Fire ratings and documentation
  • Acoustic performance requirements
  • ESG, sustainability and Green Star
  • Supply Nation certification
  • Panel layouts, prototyping, or pre-installation coordination
Myee Collective coordinated the documentation required for Group fire ratings, acoustic performance, sustainability certifications and delivery sequencing to support project timelines.

Community
Outcomes

The completed theatre offers students, performers, and audiences an immersive environment that feels both new and deeply connected to the University’s cultural legacy. The custom perforated imagery and lighting create a memorable visual experience, while the carefully detailed surfaces support clarity, comfort, and engagement during performances and events. By retaining and reinterpreting heritage elements within a contemporary setting, the project strengthens campus identity. It gives the University community a venue that celebrates its creative history while supporting the next generation of cultural life.
