The Stage 3 development of Hymba Yumba Independent School is a thoughtful fusion of architecture, art, and acoustic performance, crafted to support both movement and learning.
Working alongside Deicke Richards, the design team set out to create a sports and performance environment that honours Indigenous culture while prioritising student wellbeing. At the heart of the space is Seeds, an artwork by proud Larrakia, Wardaman, and Karajarri woman Jenna Lee, integrated as a key visual and cultural anchor.
This piece forms part of the Contours of Country range, developed in collaboration with Blaklash, a leading First Nations creative consultancy, to embed Indigenous storytelling directly into architectural surfaces.
The result is a high-impact interior that is as culturally resonant as it is functional, transforming a busy sports hall into a place of pride, identity, and focus.
Our
Contribution
We supplied high-performance acoustic panels featuring Jenna Lee’s Seeds Reversed artwork, ensuring the sports hall delivers both outstanding sound control and a visually powerful presence.
Working closely with Deicke Richards and Blaklash, we procured and coordinated the integration of the artwork into the acoustic system so that the cultural narrative, architectural vision, and technical performance all aligned seamlessly. This collaboration allowed us to bring a sophisticated acoustic solution to life in a way that is deeply connected to Country and community.
What We Procured
- Acoustic wall & ceiling systems
- MDF panels
- Indigenous design panels
Technical Requirements Supported
The project required the following:- Fire ratings and documentation
- Acoustic performance requirements
- ESG, sustainability and Green Star
- Supply Nation certification
- Panel layouts, prototyping, or pre-installation coordination
Community
Outcomes
By foregrounding First Nations art and stories, the project affirms cultural identity for Indigenous students and offers all young people daily exposure to living Indigenous knowledge and creativity.
Through the Contours of Country initiative, 15% of every sale from this range is returned to the artist, ensuring that cultural contribution is matched by tangible economic benefit. This model fosters a meaningful, ongoing partnership among the school community, First Nations creatives, and the built environment, setting a benchmark for how educational spaces can honour Country while meeting high acoustic standards.
